ORLANDO, FL — Orlando Magic guard Gilbert Arenas was served with child support and custody papers as he left the court during halftime of the Magic’s loss to the Miami Heat on Thursday night.

The court documents, served by Rob Bamberg of ProServe USA, and obtained by The Associated Press, were a California petition filed by Laura Mendoza Govan. She identified herself as his ex-girlfriend in the documents.

The petition seeks custody and child support for three children whom Govan says Arenas fathered and has since “financially cut off.” She is also seeking support for an unborn child, as well as monthly support for the other children.

In the petition, she is seeking $109,000 in monthly support payments from Arenas and $1.3 million annually.

Govan could not be reached for comment.

A hearing in the case has been set for March 8 in Los Angeles. Orlando plays at Sacramento on March 9.

“Everything I say is reaction for something I did,” Arenas said after the Magic’s 110-92 victory at Washington Friday. “She got served, so now she wants to say something on TV, that’s all it is. I don’t pay attention to it. My lawyer said I can take it because … it’s just reactions to reactions.”

He said he wasn’t surprised by Govan serving him with the petition. He also disputed her claim that he hasn’t supported her financially.

“I don’t pay much attention to it because this is who she is as a person,” he said. “It’s sad that it has to be in the public’s eye. She gets money. I mean when a girl asks for $100,000 a month and you say no, that doesn’t mean you’re cut off. You’re still getting 20. … That’s the thing that bothers me. She tells the world that she’s not getting money. She gets $20,000 a month.”

Arenas’ attorney, Lisa Fishberg of Washington-based Schertler & Onorato, said in a written statement that, “This is a private matter involving young children. It is inappropriate for Ms. Govan and her attorneys to attempt to turn it into a public spectacle. Gilbert Arenas has been extremely generous in paying monthly support voluntarily. The accusation that they have been ‘financially cut off’ has no basis in fact.”

Govan states in the documents that she and Arenas had about a nine-year relationship that included a September 2008 engagement. The documents also say they lived together in a pair of homes that Arenas owned in Virginia while playing with the Wizards.

Govan is originally from California and the documents say she has returned to the West Coast and that she and the children are living in a low-budget hotel.

She claims in her petition that during the course of the relationship Arenas kicked her out of the homes several times. She says Arenas cut off contact with her and the children in early December, shortly before he was traded to the Magic and moved to Florida.

Hiring the right team has a significant impact on the success of any company, but it is even more critical in a high-volume, low-margin industry. This of course is the world in which those who provide legal service of process are accustomed.

Throughout the years we have experienced many situations with process servers. We have found the best process servers are those who are hungry, want the work, and will do whatever it takes to get the job done. Process server employment can be stressful at times, more so than not. A good process server must be able to work on a moment’s notice. There are certain situations where it is imperative that a subpoena be served within 2 hours or less, sometimes immediately. Having a process server who is flexible and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done is a huge asset to a business. At the end of the day these process servers end up making the most money because they end up serving the most legal documents.

Most counties are divided up by zip codes. For example, in Orange County, Florida there are sixty-three zip codes. Some zip codes get more work than others. An Orlando Process Server working downtown can expect a much higher volume than rural Orlando Process Servers. Although from time to time, extra work will be given to the process server who displays a positive attitude and is hungry for the business. It reminds me of when I used to wait tables at a restaurant. I was very positive and worked very hard to please my customers. In the end I almost always made the most tips because of my positive attitude. These are the type of process servers we are always looking for to take a company to the next level. As they say, attitude controls your altitude.

Another key ingredient in running a successful process serving company is departmentalizing. A successful practice has several departments which all contribute to a superior level of service. A marketing department handles various tasks including but not limited to: marketing materials, email campaigns, sponsorships, networking within the national association of professional process servers (e.g., NAPPS), industry associations and events, public relations and website management. Without marketing, the business will never exist. Once we get the business, managing the work flow and ensuring efficiency is critical in providing a high level of service. An intake department is responsible for data entry.

One of the most critical elements of the business is managing customer relationships and expectations. Serving clients in the legal profession can be very demanding at times, and the process server plays an important part in the efficiency of the practice. One of the worst situations a client can run into is going to a deposition only to find out that the deponent did not show up because the subpoena was never served.
